Frequently asked questions

Where is Callot Island?

Callot Island (Île Callot) lies in the Bay of Morlaix, off Carantec, in Finistère, Brittany. It is reached from Carantec by a tidal road that the sea covers at high tide.

When can you cross to Callot Island?

Around low tide, usually twice a day. This site counts the road as passable while the predicted water height stays below 3.80 m. Today's times are at the top of this page; other days are on the Day and Month pages.

Can you cross on foot and by car?

Yes, the road can be used on foot or by car, during the same windows. If water starts covering the road, don't go on.

How long does the crossing stay open?

A few hours around each low tide. The higher the tidal coefficient, the further the sea goes out and the longer the road stays open. On small coefficients it may not open at all.

How are the times worked out?

From WorldTides water height predictions at the start of the road (48.7187° N, 3.9657° W): the road counts as dry while the predicted sea stays below 3.80 m. Coefficients come from the Brest tides, the French reference port. All times are Paris time.

Are these times official?

No. This is an independent site, not linked to the town of Carantec. Wind and low air pressure can bring the sea in earlier than predicted: leave a safety margin of about 30 minutes for the way back and trust what you see on the spot.

How far ahead are times available?

From three months before to three months after today, day by day or month by month. The same times are in an Android app.
